I first learned photography at a young age from my father who worked as a news photographer/reporter in the late 1940's. Always the subject in front of his camera, my brother, sister and I were accustomed to having our photos taken.I remember the curiosity of the twin lens reflex camera he used and the moments he showed us the results. I was amazed at what he could do with this camera.
My first real use of a camera began in 1969 when my father bought a Nikon F. Enrolling in a photo class in college I was soon hooked. The magic of a darkroom was a spellbinding experience. Each photographer remembers the first experiences as the images came to life in a tray of developer.
The advent of the digital camera has taken much of the joy away from the medium as photography has drastically changed gears into the future.I still tend to shoot film using a 1950's era Leica M3 and an M6. As we head into the future of ever changing photography the use of film is becoming less and less.
Photography has taken me many places over the last 15 years since I moved to Bangkok, Thailand in 1990. I have seen the reality of situations , both good and bad. Images of joy, fear, death, destruction and hope. It is often difficult to remain an outsider when we see the reality of these situations through a camera lens.
As a photographer we are often thrust into the middle of situations often so close you can feel every movement of the situation. We are the observers faced with a challenge to show reality as it is, both good and bad. The camera is a tool that enables us to feel, to touch and to change what we see.
Since moving to Bangkok, Thailand in 1990 I have worked for numerous organizations as both writer and photographer: United Nations, Save the Children UK, World Vision International, Gamma Liaison (New York), Getty Images (New York), Newsweek Magazine, Habitat for Humanity International/ Assignments have included Exxon Oil, Bloomberg (Hong Kong, USA), Bechtel, AT&T, UN Chronicles Magazine. Discovery Channel (USA). Paris Match, Bizare Magazine (UK).
